Bigger bottles taste better – it's a fact. Magnums are our favourite format because they age more slowly, developing greater layers of complexity. They're also the perfect way to celebrate.

It's been two decades since I planted my first vineyard at Storrington Priory for Sugrue South Downs and to mark the occasion we've released this limited edition of The Trouble With Dreams in magnum.

We only make The Trouble With Dreams in large formats in exceptional vintages and 2020 was certainly one of those. You'll remember how warm, bright, and seemingly endless that summer was, and we harvested our fruit in near-perfect conditions.

Bottled in July 2021 and aged on its lees for 5 years, the 2020 is a creamy, generous expression of The Trouble With Dreams, with hints of clementine, blossom, and honey.

And like all our magnum releases, its capacity to age is enormous. In 2025, The Trouble With Dreams 2009  in magnum won Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards – a historic first for English wine. I have just as high hopes for this.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

  • GRAPES

    60% Chardonnay

    40% Pinot Noir

    Dosage: 8g/L, 12% ABV.

  • VINEYARDS

    Mount Harry Vineyard, East Sussex

    Coldharbour Vineyard, West Sussex

    Storrington Priory Vineyard, West Sussex

  • WINEMAKING

    50% fermented in 600L and 228L ex-Burgundy barrels of various ages; 50% in stainless steel, without malolactic fermentation.

    Bottled in July 2021, followed by 72 months on lees. First disgorged in July 2026.

FOOD PAIRING

In its youth, pair The Trouble With Dreams with super-fresh seafood – oysters, crab, prawns – eaten by the bucketful, ideally with the sun on your face and looking over the ocean.

As the wine gains complexity and richness with time in bottle, it can then handle bolder dishes. Fish and chips is always a winner, but go as posh as the mood takes you. Sun and sea views optional.
